Daniela Chirion

Over the following weeks, Galerie Lloyd presents a fluid exhibition comprising never seen before, older and newer works of Daniela Chirion, most of which focus on the theme of the sky.

Either the main subject of her canvases, as background for the recognizable skyline of Ostend or as the contrast element in contre-jour still lifes depicting objects connected to her memories, the sky is a recurring leitmotif in the artist's work. It is not the sky of classical landscapes, but rather an inner sky, sometimes dark and haunted by storms and absorbing vortices, other times blue and serene, sometimes radiating the heat of golden, red and orange hues, other times imploded and bordering the abstraction of black, white and grey brushstrokes. 

The exhibition is organised together with a two-month open studio running at the same time. The composition of the show will change constantly, with new canvases constantly replacing the current ones, so be sure that you visit the gallery more than once in the coming weeks.   

“Through various contemporary mediums, Chirion investigates humanity’s quiet thoughts. Be it painting, drawing, photography or video art, her art exudes ephemeral human intimacy. Each series has a distinctive colour palette, the tones and hues of which underline the depicted theme. In her White Shades series, for example, the artist varies notes of grey to convey the texture of bed and pillow sheets, capturing their latent heat, as if someone had just left the scene, their absence perceptible.

Poetry, present indirectly in all of Chirion’s work, is another avenue of expression for the artist. In her poems, she conveys the restless movement of her inner world, questions the human condition as a whole, and more generally seeks meaning through the mundane, the normal, the every day – a subject which has taken precedence in her corpus since 2008. Chirion’s works of art are displayed at various cultural and political institutions around the world.”

De komende weken presenteert Galerie Lloyd een vloeiende tentoonstelling met nooit eerder vertoonde, oudere en nieuwere werken van Daniela Chirion, waarvan de meeste zich richten op het thema ‘lucht’.


Of het nu het hoofdonderwerp is van haar doeken, als achtergrond voor de herkenbare skyline van Oostende of als contrastelement in contre-jour stillevens die objecten afbeelden die verband houden met haar herinneringen, de lucht is een terugkerend leidmotief in het werk van de kunstenaar. Het is niet de lucht van klassieke landschappen, maar eerder een innerlijke lucht, soms donker en geteisterd door stormen en absorberende wervelingen, soms blauw en sereen, soms de hitte van gouden, rode en oranje tinten uitstralend, soms geïmplodeerd en grenzend aan de abstractie van zwarte, witte en grijze penseelstreken.



De tentoonstelling wordt ook georganiseerd in combinatie met een twee maanden lopende open studio. De samenstelling van de tentoonstelling zal voortdurend veranderen, met nieuwe doeken die de huidige vervangen, dus zorg ervoor dat u de galerie de komende weken meer dan eens bezoekt.



“Via verschillende hedendaagse media onderzoekt Chirion de stille gedachten van de mensheid. Of het nu gaat om schilderen, tekenen, fotografie of videokunst, haar kunst straalt vluchtige menselijke intimiteit uit. Elke serie heeft een kenmerkend kleurenpalet, waarvan de tonen en tinten het afgebeelde thema onderstrepen. In haar White Shades-serie varieert de kunstenaar bijvoorbeeld grijstinten om de textuur van bed- en kussenslopen over te brengen, waarbij hun latente warmte wordt vastgelegd, alsof iemand net de scène heeft verlaten, hun afwezigheid voelbaar.

Poëzie, indirect aanwezig in al Chirion's werk, is een andere manier van expressie voor de kunstenaar. In haar gedichten brengt ze de rusteloze beweging van haar innerlijke wereld over, stelt ze de menselijke conditie als geheel ter discussie en zoekt ze meer in het algemeen naar betekenis via het alledaagse, het normale, het alledaagse- een onderwerp dat sinds 2008 voorrang heeft gekregen in haar oeuvre. Chirion's kunstwerken worden tentoongesteld in verschillende culturele en politieke instellingen over de hele wereld.”
