Joost Colpaert

The concept of a cycle and especially fluidity are a common thread in Joost Colpaert's work: water as a central force of inspiration. His recent series of landscapes and maps show the relationship between abstraction and figuration. Actually, our landscapes consist largely of forms determined by delimitation. This creates a confrontation with nature or the river that cuts through everything: a tension between curved and straight lines, between nature and reason. These landscapes initiate harmonious compositions in which the artist combines monochrome surfaces with the pure course of a river. Monochrome surfaces with a ground caused by the reaction of water and oil give a depth, a kind of root from which nature surfaces, chaos as an undertone to human reasoning. Composition and colour form the music of the painting. "Man became an artist from the moment he accepted that nature becomes an object of contemplation and imagination." (Raffaele Milani, Esthétique du paysage, 2005). In the new exhibition, more recent works dialogue with the map works and the landscapes. (J.C.)

Het concept van een cyclus en vooral vloeibaarheid vormen een rode draad in het werk van Joost Colpaert : water als centrale kracht van inspiratie. Zijn recente serie landschappen en kaarten tonen de relatie tussen abstractie en figuratie. Eigenlijk bestaan onze landschappen grotendeels uit vormen die bepaald worden door afbakening. Hierdoor ontstaat een confrontatie met de natuur of de rivier die alles doorsnijdt: een spanning tussen gebogen en rechte lijnen, tussen natuur en ratio. Deze landschappen zijn een aanzet tot harmonieuze composities waarin de kunstenaar monochrome vlakken combineert met de pure loop van een rivier. Monochrome vlakken met een ondergrond veroorzaakt door de reactie van water en olie geven een diepte, een soort wortel van waaruit de natuur aan de oppervlakte komt, chaos als ondertoon voor het menselijk redeneren. De compositie en kleur vormen de muziek van het schilderij. "De mens werd kunstenaar vanaf het moment dat hij accepteerde dat de natuur een doel wordt van contemplatie en verbeelding." (Raffaele Milani, Esthétique du paysage, 2005). In de nieuwe tentoonstelling gaan recentere werken in dialoog met de kaartwerken en ook landschappen. (J.C.)
