Nils Verkaeren

The painting studio is not the ideal workplace for Nils Verkaeren (°1980). As a contemporary ‘plein airist’, the direct contact with nature is crucial for him. Balancing between painting and reality, he seeks to engage in a dialogue with nature. To become one with it, yet critically ensuring that he does not lose sight of his own vision. Verkaeren is inspired by the constant change that nature undergoes. He endeavors to capture that energy in large canvases and small wooden panels. By integrating pathos and his sensory experience, he transcends the genre scene to the extent that it becomes a personal parody. A manipulation of reality in which the time Verkaeren spent in the landscape is encapsulated.

To add an emotional connotation to his works, Verkaeren repeatedly withdrew from society. By choice, he traveled to completely remote areas, preferably as rural and untouched as possible. Landscapes that made painting almost impossible. These harsh conditions affected his process in such a way that Verkaeren's connection to that place permeated the result. He does not simply paint what he sees, he experiences what he paints. This fact creates tension within him, a sort of restlessness that makes his body of work anything but classical. It compels him to walk around his canvases and literally move away from that impressionistic approach.

‘Waiting for the Flowers to Pop’ is, however, an ode to the Belgian spring. Verkaeren appreciates the fact that we can live so closely with the seasons here. Painting in Flanders challenges him to rediscover his balance between figuration and abstraction. In rich, carefully considered color gradations, he painted blossoms of tulip trees, cherry trees, and apple trees. Upon closer inspection, these blossoms are merely well-positioned brushstrokes. This creates the impression that Verkaeren is sculpting his flowers out of the oil paint. He deconstructed and reconstructed the vegetation in such a way that it is no longer about the abstracted subject. Like the artworks of Per Kirkeby and Pierre Soulage, it is the art of painting itself that takes center stage.

The exhibition ‘Waiting for the Flowers to Pop’ will be displayed at Galerie Lloyd from June 1 until July 14. Verkaeren would like to thank Gert Buelens for providing his green oasis – Kasteeldomein De Borght, in Mechelen Nekkerspoel – for this painting project.

Het schildersatelier is niet de uitgelezen werkplek voor Nils Verkaeren (°1980). Als hedendaags ‘plein airist’ is het directe contact met de natuur van cruciaal belang. Laverend tussen schilderij en realiteit tracht hij in dialoog te treden met de natuur. Eén te worden, maar zodanig kritisch dat hij zijn eigen visie niet uit het oog verliest. Verkaeren is immers begeesterd door de constante verandering die de natuur ondergaat. Die energie tracht hij te capteren in grote doeken en kleine houten panelen. Door het integreren van pathos en zijn zintuigelijke ervaring overstijgt hij het genretafereel zodanig dat het een persoonlijke persiflage vormt. Een manipulatie van de werkelijkheid waarin de tijd die Verkaeren in het landschap doorbracht, wordt samengevat.

Om die emotionele connotatie aan zijn werken toe te voegen, trok Verkaeren zich diverse malen terug uit de maatschappij. Uit vrije wil reisde hij naar totaal afgelegen gebieden. Liefst zo ruraal en ongerept mogelijk. Landschappen die het schilderen bijna onmogelijk maakten. Deze harde omstandigheden effectueerden zijn werkwijze dusdanig dat Verkaerens connectie met die plek doordrong tot in het eindresultaat. Hij schildert namelijk niet louter wat hij ziet, hij ervaart wat hij schildert. Dat gegeven creëert spanning in hem. Een soort onrust die zijn oeuvre alles behalve klassiek maakt. Het verplicht hem met zijn doeken rond te wandelen en letterlijk af te stappen van die impressionistische benadering.

‘Waiting for the Flowers to Pop’ is echter een ode aan de Belgische lente. Verkaeren houdt er namelijk van dat wij hier zo één met de seizoenen kunnen leven. Schilderen in Vlaanderen daagt hem uit zijn balans tussen figuratie en abstractie te herontdekken. In rijke weloverwogen kleurgradaties schilderde hij bloesems van tulpenbomen, kerselaren en appelbomen. Die in feiten, van naderbij bekeken, louter wel gepositioneerde penseelstreken zijn. Het voedt de indruk dat Verkaeren al boetserend uit de olieverf zijn bloemen vormgeeft. Hij deconstrueerde en reconstrueerde de vegetatie dusdanig dat het niet meer over het geabstraheerde onderwerp gaat. Zoals in het oeuvre van Per Kirkeby en Pierre Soulage is het de schilderkunst aan zich die centraal komt te staan.

De tentoonstelling ‘Waiting for the Flowers to Pop’ wordt tussen 1 juni en 14 juli in Galerie Lloyd getoond. Verkaeren wil graag Gert Buelens bedanken die zijn groene oase: Kasteeldomein De Borght, in Mechelen Nekkerspoel, voor dit schilderproject ter beschikking stelde.
