The works shown in Galerie Lloyd under the general title ‘Beyond the Visible’ are among my most recent productions. As is usually the case with my solo presentations, there is room for both graphic and painting work.

Originally a graphic artist, I remain faithful to this medium and it will always claim an important place in my oeuvre, although an evolution is also noticeable here. Since 2023 I have been working on the 'Carceri' series, which is a reference to and a tribute to the famous series by G.B. Piranesi, one of Italy's most famous graphic artists. I myself was a great admirer of him from an early age and - with my own many visits to Rome and Italy in mind – sooner or later a meeting between the two of us had to take place. In the current exhibition, I present the most recent etchings from this series and a new monumental etching – ‘Il grande Carcere’ – which will probably be my last etching on this large format; in the future I will only continue to work on smaller formats.

The paintings:

Without explicitly meaning it that way, a series has also emerged here, which I like to give the general title ‘Jardin d'eau’. Initially there was a first little painting (‘L'isola’) where I referred once again to my artist's residence on the island of Comacina, in 2014. I also wanted to take on the challenge of depicting the island in a misty environment, with vague reflections in the water.

Beyond the visible, so to speak...

And because painting landscapes has given me the opportunity to use more free, looser paint structure for some time, I have also started to explore more the element of water/reflection. And that is also noticeable in this series.

Some works go almost into abstraction, and this is a very welcome evolution for me. Within the exhibition as a whole, the ‘Jardin d'eau’ series forms an entity in itself. There are also a few more ‘classical’ landscape studies on display, where the subject actually provides more of an excuse to explore the free brushwork and let it take its own course. Actually, here it is just pure painting, for the joy of painting itself.

Finally, at first glance, the paintings and etchings seem to have little in common. This is true, as long as one looks solely at the subject and the technique used. But I always started from the medium itself, to determine the final result and theme. What they certainly have in common is that all the works, especially upon closer inspection, show more than appears at first glance.

In other words: there is more ‘Beyond the Visible’.

De werken die in Galerie Lloyd getoond worden onder de algemene noemer ‘Beyond the visible’, behoren tot mijn meest recente producties. Zoals meestal bij mijn solo-presentaties, is er ruimte voor zowel grafisch als schilderkunstig werk.

Van oorsprong graficus, blijf ik trouw aan dit medium, en zal het steeds een belangrijke plaats in mijn oeuvre opeisen, hoewel ook hier een evolutie merkbaar is. Sinds 2023 werk ik aan de ‘Carceri’-reeks, tevens een verwijzing naar, en een hommage aan de roemruchte reeks van G.B. Piranesi, één van Italië’s beroemdste – grafische – kunstenaars.

Zelf was ik van jongs af aan een groot bewonderaar van deze graficus en – ook met mijn eigen vele bezoeken aan Rome en Italië in gedachten – daardoor moest er vroeg of laat toch een ontmoeting tussen ons beiden plaats vinden... Ik toon heel concreet de laatste gerealiseerde etsen binnen deze serie (die nog steeds verder loopt) èn een nieuwe, monumentale ets (‘Il grande Carcere’). Waarschijnlijk zal dit mijn laatste ets zijn op dit grote formaat, in de toekomst zal ik enkel nog op de ‘kleinere’ formaten blijven werken...

De schilderijen:

Zonder het explicitiet zo te bedoelen, is ook hier een reeks ontstaan, die ik graag de algemene titel ‘Jardin d’eau’ meegeef... Aanvankelijk was er een eerste schilderijtje (‘L’isola’) waar ik in de eerste plaats nog eens refereerde naar mijn artist’s residence op het eiland Comacina, in 2014. Ik wou ook graag even de uitdaging aangaan om het eiland weer te geven in een mistige omgeving, met vage reflecties in het water.

Voorbij het zichtbare, zeg maar...

En omdat het schilderen van landschappen me reeds enige tijd de mogelijkheid gaf om een vrijere, lossere verfstructuur te hanteren, ben ik ook het element water/reflectie meer gaan uitdiepen. En dat is ook merkbaar in deze reeks.

Sommige werken / beelden neigen (bijna) naar het abstracte, en dit is voor mij een zeer welkome evolutie. Binnen het geheel van de expo vormt de serie ‘Jardin d’eau’ een entiteit op zich. Verder zijn er nog enkele ‘klassiekere’ landschapsstudies te zien, waarbij het onderwerp eigenlijk meer een excuus vormt om de vrijere en lossere penseelvoering te exploreren en haar eigen gang te laten gaan... Eigenlijk is het hier gewoon puur schilderen, omwille van de vreugde van het schilderen zelf.

Tot slot: op het eerste zicht lijken de schilderijen en etsen weinig met elkaar gemeen te hebben. Dit klopt, voor zover men louter en alleen naar het onderwerp en de aangewende techniek kijkt. Maar ik ben steeds vertrokken vanuit het medium zèlf, om het uiteindelijhke eindresultaat en thema te bepalen. Wat ze zéker gemeen hebben, is dat alle werken, vooral bij een nadere beschouwing, méér tonen, dan er op het eerste zicht te zien is.

Met andere woorden: er is méér dan/voorbij het zichtbare... ‘Beyond the Visible’.
